Bollywood
been a restricted place for women empowerment and shown women as per the
societal build up norms to be beautiful, know household work, humble, weak,
dependent and should treat her husband like a god, this image depicted in the
movies in the 80s and 90s movies mostly. The female oriented roles were rare
and screen timing of women in the movie were rather less than hero’s in the
movies.
However with
a thankful awakening of filmmakers have realized how important it is to portray
female oriented roles and give them more screen timing to show some empowerment
through them. Movies were always been a big part of everyone's life so it became
important to change the wave of thinking. Movies in 90s not only shows women
weak but also shows casual sexism, body shaming, racism and use them as a
sexual entity to entertain men casually like women were entitled to be in these
conditions. These thoughts through movies got into the societal thinking and
created on acceptance for this kind of behavior. Here are some empowering
movies for you.
1.Queen
At first comes my favorite movie with beautiful story and
amazing empowering songs represent a very relatable character of a simple girl
named Rani from a stereotypical but supporting family. His father runs a sweet
shop and fell in love with a boy named Vijay her family friend. They were going
to get married but just before some days of marriage Vijay dump her saying “our status don’t match” and she got
heartbroken and lock herself in her room for some days and realized that this
is the time I want to fulfill my dream to go Paris for her honeymoon even
though she don’t have partner this time but she want it and even convinced her
parents and been there for solo honeymoon. She meets new people made friends
and learn new things and eventually dumps her fiancΓ©e (Vijay) when he chases her
to apologize for what he did and want to marry her now. The film is successful
on showing self-love as a journey.
2.ENGLISH
VINGLISH
This film shows a journey of a housewife named Shashi played by
none other than stunning Sridevi. Shashi takes care of her family and runs a
ladoo (Indian sweet) making business from her home only even though she handle so many things
alone but still her family always crack jokes on her bad English speaking skills mainly her
daughter and husband. After soo much humiliation she got a golden chance to
learn English when she been to her sister’s daughter wedding in New York. She joined classes for that (English
learning classes) and got surprised by how other people see her as an
entrepreneur and not as a housewife whose entire life revolves around her
family even after not getting any respect or gratitude from them. At the end on
the wedding day she spoke a speech in English infront of everyone and stunned
everyone with her excellent speaking skills and touchy story. This story
depicts that how being confident about yourself is a way to self love .
3.HIGHWAY
This
film is about a girl name Veera, a young bride to be who got kidnapped by a gangster because she
been to highway for some space before her marriage at night. Even though in the
starting the kidnapper seemed rude to her but still they end up falling in love
with each other and in some last scenes of movie she fulfilled her dream of
moving in with her partner in a small house in the Himalayas. She actually
moved in the house in the Himalayas but after a great twist you will get to
know about the twist when you watch this movie by yourself no more spoilers. This
movie also showed us that every story doesn't end up as happy as we think it should be, just enjoy the moments which you have and be happy
4. THAPPAD
Credits: India Today News
This movie represents the real issue that needs to be fought,
in order to get women on an equal platform. It represent a normal household
women slapped by her so called good husband when she stop her husband from
fighting with his colleague in a house party. At that moment she slowly
realized that it was a wrong relationship or marriage and decided to file a divorce.
Everyone around her questions her “why you are taking one slap so seriously
it’s just a slap” but she excellently answers the question with just one line
that “Ya it’s is just a slap but he was not allowed or entitled to do that”.
This movie clearly represent even a little bit of voilence is not acceptable in
any relationship by any gender and exploitation of any gender is also not
acceptable.5. RAAZI

Google Chrome Last but not
least here comes one of the best movie of Alia Bhatt based on true story of a
girl named Sehmat an undercover RAW Agent. Before the 1971 Indo-Pak war India
set some undercover plans to spy on Pakistan activities. According to that plan
she got trained and married to Iqbal (played by Vicky kaushal) her father’s
friend son and a military officer in Pakistan. She followed the plan even when
her life was on stake because she was living in Pakistan and any mistake could be
life risking for her but still she gave many important information to India and
saved many lives in war. She done this all with being undercover all the time
and balancing both her characters of wife and undercover spy. This movie shows the inner struggles she go
through in these times and clearly depicted that women were always been compatible
to men.
