BEAUTIFUL STORY MAANBHAJAN BY RABINDRANATH TAGORE

Stories by Rabindranath Tagore’ is a television series based on the novels and short stories of the Nobel Laureate, Rabindranath Tagore. It was directed by Anurag Basu and originally aired on Epic TV in 2015, it can now be found on Netflix. Basu had adapted the show from Tagore’s stories to suit the understanding of contemporary times. Rabindranath Tagore's writings were known for being ahead of his time as he wrote about many matters which is still considered taboo. He had written so many stories that take you on the journey of emotions, relativeness, and peace with cultural accuracy. Today I will discuss one of his story which depicted a journey of a woman realizing her talent and worth.

The story starts with Giribala and Gopinath which got married when they both were children. As child marriages were common at that time in Bengal, Rabindranath has shown that in their stories too so that we can have a more clear idea of prevailing time and cultures followed in that time in Bengal. Giribala and Gopinath grew up as best friends rather than husband and wife. Gopinath belongs to the zamindars family and when Gopinath’s father died and he took over the business and their relationship started to cool down little by little. Giribala started to feel lonely in the mansion as his husband now neglects her and spend most of the time in theatrical shows which were one of the only entertainment source of the people at that time. Gopinath used to sneaks backstage after Latika performance to spend more intimate time with her. Gopinath was a very possessive person and doesn’t like when other men gaze at her(Latika). One day Gopinath came home late and took over all the jewelry of Giribala with him and elopes with his lover Latika.

Eventually, Giribala started to doubt Gopinath and sends her helper Shudhomukhi out to track her husband’s evening activities and she reported back that Latika the stage performance was good but she is an unlikely candidate for his affections. Now Giribala became more curious and decides to go there secretly and see the show. When she sees Latika emerge from her adoring fans, including Gopinath, Giribala cringes with jealousy. The main motive of Giribala to spy on her husband daily in the shows slowly started to fade and she started to feel every emotion which story and characters try to depict through their performances. She now slowly started to love acting. Latika on the other side was not just a stupid lover, she knows that Gopinath is a rich zamindar. Gopinath used to fund for Latika shows. This he proceeds to do, and he gets the best director, musicians, and production. Production’s new directors look critically at Latika's skills as he was expecting some professional acting. When Gopinath enters the rehearsal and sees Latika suffering from the director’s contemptuous criticism, he angrily took her out of the rehearsals and proceeds to live with her out to a remote country residence. This action of Gopinath led Giribala to live alone as she is now abandoned by her husband Gopinath. Now Gopinath and Latika started living happily but Latika to miss her old days deep inside and again feel the need to perform on stage in front of lots of audiences.
One day Latika reads in a newspaper that a new star emerged now.

This increased the curiosity of Latika and she goes back to Kolkata to see the new star. This new star was famous for her role as Miribai. When Latika attends the show and finally gets to know who the new star, it's none other than Giribala herself. Giribala’s performance was even so much better than Latika’s performance. Now Latika herself was compelled to see a show between an audience adorning Giribala’s acting who once adores Latika’s performance.
In this story, Giribala discovers her identity in between this chaos in her life. She has always been dependent on her husband for everything but when her husband left her alone she was brave enough to collect her courage and fulfill her dreams and she succeeded in it too.
