HOW DO EDUCATION SYSTEM STARTED SEXUALIZING YOUNG GIRLS IN INDIA?

The strategy of policing girls or putting girls under a particular dress code had been started from the very beginning of the girl’s education system because girl’s education started very late and wasn’t even considered appropriate for girls in general. At the beginning of the 19th century, people do start educating women just because of the fact that “mothers are the first teacher of their children” even though this fact is correct but society at that time was just providing primary or secondary education to women at that time in other countries like Greece, America, Britain, etc higher education was still not considered important. The idea of “good housemaker or household women” remained for a long time and restricted women to have formal education.

Headlines such as girls are sent back home from school for wearing clothes which show too much skin, young girls being punished inhumanly for breaking dress code, girls bra straps showing is termed as something offensive and distracting according to school officials. These are some news which is obviously being ignored by most people and is not termed as something to be improved as they think all these things do not cause any problem to girls but was there for their safety with the changing societal thinking now students are getting through these kinds of restrictions in daily life and share them on social platforms such as Youtube, Twitter, IGTV, etc.

HOW WE CAN BRING A CHANGE IN MATTERS LIKE THESE

  1. We just put efforts to hide girls more and more through sexualizing their clothes rather than teaching men their limits.
  2. Teaching them that consent matters.
  3. NO can be someone’s answer and accept that.
  4. Girls can wear whatever they feel comfortable in.
  5. Meaningful comments or casual sexism is not ok from any of the gender.
  6. Stop telling girls what she can do and what not.
  7. Make a friendly environment so that every gender can feel comfortable in it rather than putting a restriction on everyone.
  8. Promote self-love more rather than sexualizing girls. Encourage them to feel comfortable in their bodies.
  9. Openly talk about homosexuality, the LGBTQI+ community, pride month, sex education. Teach them it is your choice and preference to choose what you want to be and don’t be embarrassed about

It is been noticed in many studies that puberty had been a terrible time for both of the genders mainly kills confidence in many but it is particularly worse for girls as they go through lots of mood swings, with experiencing periods for the first time, changes in the body and in times like these rather than supporting and helping them to gain confidence, schools start to force girls in the vicious circle of strict restrictions and punishments.
